Life in plastic, it’s fantastic.. remember Aqua and their cult Barbie Girl song? Good times it was with pop culture on the rise, bursting in colours and tasting like the old, good M&Ms. Great it was indeed, but only until we realised that its whole querkiness was built on no real foundations rather than fast sell and fast gain, Barbie-like fake promises and have more & waste more culture.
Well okay, maybe not everything was so empty, maybe we actually inherited something. A big something. An ever-growing Everest of smelly plasticky garbage. Yuck.
Only 20 years later plastic is not just pilling up but it’s spreading around everything quite literary, including our oceans, soil, food and our own blood. Our own blood, yes. And that’s certainly not fantastic. Wondering why?
PLASTIC IS HUGELY TOXIC
Plastic is not only everywhere but it is also leaching toxic chemicals into our environment and bloodstreams. Those chemicals can be now found in the tissue of nearly all of us, and what’s even worse, they have been linked with numerous diseases, such as cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity and hormonal disruptions. Two broad classes of plastic-related chemicals are of critical concern for human health— BPA and phthalates, both used to make plastic stronger. Think toys. Think your kids. And also food containers and plastic wrap, through which toxic phthalates are leaking directly into your food.
Like BPA, phthalates also function as an endocrine disruptor, altering the ability of the body to produce and maintain proper levels of hormones, disrupting health and fertility of both men and women. Included in the various health risks associated with phthalates are asthma in children, lower IQ’s for a developing brain, ADHD as well as brain deterioriation, so the new plague of our times. Phthalates are also frequently added to cosmetics and beauty products like lipstick and nail polish, so you better want to check your cabinet, lovely women.
PLASTIC NEVER GOES AWAY
On top of being a toxic pollutant, plastic never really goes away. Plastic is a material made to last forever and it cannot be completely transformed into raw material like paper, for instance. Instead, it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. Some argue that plastic in this form is even more harmful than when left intact.
Even plankton, the tiniest creatures in our oceans, are eating microplastics and absorbing their hazardous chemicals while the tiny, broken down pieces of plastic are displacing the algae needed to sustain larger sea life who feed on them. Phthalates and BPA can be also found in the blood of newborns who get their portion of toxicity through the placenta before they’re even born. It’s a plastic planet with plasticky people living on it, auch.
If we want to reverse this trend and make sustainable living a non-negotiable PRIORITY, it is thus clear that plastic is simply not an option. It’s not an option because it’s not only terribly toxic but it is also impossible to completely dispose of it.
So, you feel like ditching all plastic now? Yes, we know how it feels and it’s exactly what we are up to by launching our plastic-free protein range and calling on the whole sports industry to ditch plastic. But remember every change is gradual. Every change starts with awareness. So take this awareness with you and help us recover our naturally beautiful and supportive environment for the amazing loving spieces that we all truly are.
